Tour Host Profile
Sue Golden has owned this perfect piece of paradise since 1980. With a BA in Landscape Design from Cal Poly, she initially came to the area to work at Fowler Nursery. After a number of years of designing water features on the side, she began growing aquatic plants that were not available locally. Fourteen years ago she established the nursery to accommodate a growing market for water gardens by providing plants that are acclimatized to the local growing conditions. All plants are grown on site, from seeds, cuttings and division. Sue likes to experiment with a bit of the unusual, including perennials, grasses, small trees and shrubs, most of which are compatible with water and wet locations. She specializes in designing solutions that use natural filtration and biological systems. These complete water ecosystems contain water snails and fish. In a large pond at the front of the nursery, Sue grows tropical and night-blooming lilies in 1 gallon pots, submerged in water. She tests new varieties here, cutting the lilies back and draining the pond each year. The lilies are then re-grown from what’s left after cutting. The pond, which Sue created, is formed of soil over a liner, and is filtered solely by the plants. Surrounded with a variety of trees, shrubs and plants that Sue has selected for their compatibility with the pond, it ‘s now an oasis, where birds, dragonflies and butterflies abound. Sue’s services include on-site consultation and design. Once planted, she advises on how to properly maintain the water garden by cutting back, feeding and constantly analyzing the ecosystem.
